Lesson Plan for Technology Competition
SUBJECT AREA: Science
GRADE LEVEL: 3rd
4th or 5th in review or extension
TIMELINE: Day 1 – Intro
Day 2 – Research Continued
Day 3 – Synthesis
CONTENT OBJECTIVE: 3rd-The learner will identify the Solar System and determine its
layout, make-up, and characteristics.
4th/5th-In review of prior learning experiences, the learner will
participate in this lesson to re-activate prior knowledge or extend
previous knowledge.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What does the Solar System consist of and what are the
characteristics of its components?
LESSON SEQUENCE:
1. Eye Opener: Project the NASA Website on the wall for
students. Play the intro for them that consists of a space
timeline.
2. Activate prior knowledge using K-W-L Chart to motivate
learning and generate additional questions and interest. What
do we know about the solar system?
3. Direct students to the “Planet Search” search engine. Locate
“The Nine Planets” hit for them. Access this website to model
location of information needed for the lesson. Also, have
available resource books, library books, and encyclopedias as
they might want to use in their research.
4. The students will generate a graphic organizer using
Kidspiration or Inspiration to document information obtained
in their search. (Example A or B attached)
5. Close lesson with the following acronym:
My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas.
TAKS/TEKS Correlation:
Elementary Science Objective 4: The student will demonstrate an
understanding of the earth sciences.
TEKS 3.11; 4.11; and 5.12: Science Concepts. The student knows that the natural world includes earth materials and objects in the sky. 3.11(c): identify the planets in our solar
system and their position in relation to the Sun.

Elementary Technology Applications, Grade 3-5: (a) 2:
Through the use of technology, the students will obtain information necessary for task requirements by accessing, analyzing, and evaluating the acquired information. This
tool assists in selecting appropriate technology for task completion and synthesizing knowledge. Students learn
to communicate information in different formats.
(1) a: use technology terminology appropriate to task;
(1) b: save and delete files, uses menu options and
commands, and work with more than one software
application;
(1) e: access remote equipment on a network such as a
printer or other peripherals.
(2): The student uses data input skills appropriate to the
task.
(4): The student uses a variety of strategies to acquire
information from electronic resources, with
appropriate supervision.
(6) c: determine the usefulness and appropriateness of
digital information.
(7) b: use appropriate software to express ideas and solve
problems including the use of word processing, graphics, databases, spreadsheets, simulations, and
multimedia.
(7) c: use a variety of data types including text, graphics,
digital audio, and video.
(10)c: use appropriate applications, including, but not
limited to, spreadsheets and databases to develop
charts and graphs by using data from various sources.
English Writing Objective 1: TEKS 4.15: The student writes for a
variety of audiences and purposes and in a variety of
forms. Objective 3: The student will recognize
appropriate organization of ideas in written text.
TEKS 4.19: the student selects and uses writing
processes for self-initiated and assigned writing.
Objective 6: The student will proofread for correct
punctuation, capitalization, and spelling in written
text. TEKS 4.16 (b): capitalize and spell correctly to
clarify and enhance meaning.
