NETS Summary: The purpose of this session is to provide fun and practical technology-based art activities that are easy to create. Many of the activities contain strong curriculum connections. The student-created trading cards contain information learned during book talks and studies. The magnetic puzzles are based on curriculum concepts like plant parts and the fifty states. By containing a curricular strand, teachers will be able to use these activities in a cross-curricular method combining art, technology, and the particular curricular concept that the activity contains.

Overview & Objectives: Modge Podge and the computer really can mix! From customized school activity calendar stickers to high tech wind chimes, this session has ideas for any computer. During this high-energy, fast-paced session, participants will learn how to create a variety of technology-based arts and crafts activities that they can easily replicate. The projects found in this session are made using a computer and printer. Participants will discover ways to make their computers and printers an art tool. The ancillary supplies are cost efficient and easy to find. The arts and crafts activities in this session are ones that I enjoyed with my students as a classroom teacher and projects that my fellow teachers have produced with their students and shared with me over the years. During the interactive portion of the session, the participants will have the opportunity to receive actual project samples.

Format of Presentation: lecture-interactive

Outline: 1. For ease of viewing, the presentation mode will be PowerPoint, but there will be actual examples of all 75+ activities. 2. To ensure retention and ease of replication of the projects, participants will receive a CD of directions, templates, web links, and the session PowerPoint presentation. The information contained on the CD will also be available on our district’s web site. 3. Curriculum connections will be explained and covered during the session and in detail on the CD/web site.

Supporting Research: “Children love technology and love the projects they create with computers. There is no better way to help children (and teachers) learn new skills and gain new knowledge than through a positive emotional experience the children will not forget”. Managing Technology in the Early Childhood Classroom, Hope Campbell, TCM, Inc., Westminster, CA 92683, 1999 “People the world over have used their imagination to create art since prehistoric times. Many times as something was discovered or invented it changed the way they created. Using your computer to make something is a great way to be creative while having fun with your PC”. Kids’ Computer Creations, Using Your Computer For Arts & Crafts, Carol Sabbeth, Williams Publishing Co., Charlotte, Vermont 05445, 1995
