– Fall Vegetable Garden –
Third Grade • Shanna Cisneros's Class
On Friday, October 6, 2006, Shanna Cisneros's class planted three rows of winter vegetables. We had three groups of children, with each group responsible for planting one kind of vegetable. The first group planted two lettuces: Green Ice and Great Lakes. The second group planted Sugar Snap peas. The third group planted Tall Top Early Wonder beets.

These are Green Ice lettuce seeds. They are very small. We put them in the soil one-fourth inch deep and two inches apart.
This is a picture of our classmate Albert holding three beet seeds. We planted them one inch deep and four inches apart. The seed packet says it will take eight to ten days for these seeds to germinate. Germinate means to pop out of the ground.
This is a Cascadia pea seed sitting by the drip system water hose that waters the plants. The pea seeds were the biggest seeds that we planted. We hope will harvest peas in December.
In this picture you see Tatum, Alcx, Albert, and Sharon the master gardener. They are bending down to put a seed in the soil. The black hose is a part of the drip system that waters the plants. Sharon is showing them how to plant the beet seeds.
This is the labeling system that Sharon used to make the labels for the winter veggies that we planted in the garden. In this picture, she is printing a label for Cascadia peas. The labels help us know which vegetable is planted in each row.
One Week Later: Friday, October 13, 2006
