– Musical Play –
First Grade • Gracie Escovedo's Class
February 6, 2008
Gracie Escovedo's first graders performed a musical play entitled The Elephant's Child based on a story from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories for Little Children. The students performed in the Carlson auditorium during the school day for a standing-room-only audience of students and family members, and the play was a great success.

The students' performance, together with their preparatory work that made it possible, had all the elements of an applied-learning project: layers of collaborative activities (designing and creating masks and costumes, rehearsing dialogue and music, publishing invitations and a playbill, etc.) involving real-world skills (purposefully reading, speaking, and writing) that resulted in a product (the performance) that was directed to a real audience (the Carlson community).

The first-graders also wrote the captions for the pictures on this web page, as evidenced by some developmentally appropriate inventive spelling. (We've deciphered some of the inventive spelling with correct spellings in brackets, and the names of the captions' authors are noted in parentheses.) By working together on this page, the students not only extended the value of their project by reaching out to a secondary audience (you!) but also took the opportunity to reflect on their performance and evaluate their work: note their comments about being in their places and being still while waiting their turn.

Ava T., Abigail, and Olivia were Kolokolo birds. They sang a song named "I'm a Kolokolo Bird." Olivia and her mom made the colorful feather shirts. Ava, Abigail, and Olivia made their masks in art with Genifer Best's help.
